Molière and Karagöz - Le Théatre de Karagueuz - Molière ve Karagöz
In his writings on Turkish theatre, Ottoman Levantine Adolphe Thalasso narrates how he witnessed Karagöz masters staging their own adaptations of works by Molière. Strolling through the Sublime Porte towards Sultanahmet or during a visit to Princes’ Island, one could hear the lines of Scapin uttered by Hacivat or Karagöz being picked on like La Flèche. Thalasso found out that Hasan Karagöz initiated adapting Molière's plays in first decades of the 19th century and his texts continued to be used by his apprentices throughout the century. In other words, Molière was on Turkish stage much before the private theatre companies who are mostly associated with the "western" theatre practices in the second half of the 19th century.
